Proper house plant care requires attention to the basics.
Don’t let concerns about house plant care keep you from getting the plants you really love.
Providing appropriate house plant care can insure vibrant plants and a beautiful environment in your home. There is no magic formula for house plant care and it really comes down to the basic practices of watering, feeding and, occasionally, re-potting. Understanding these three practices should keep your house plants green and colorful.
Proper watering will require a watering can, preferably with a narrow spout. Good house plant care means that you will not over water or under water. There is no hard and fast rule covering all plants, but a general approach is the finger test. If you insert your index finger into the soil up to the first joint, and the soil feels damp, then don’t water it, but if it feels dry, do! Fill the can the night before and allow it to come to room temperature, to avoid shocking the plants.
There are a few simple house plant care rules to apply to feeding. Plants that have been freshly potted will not require feeding for the first few months, while they are forming new roots. Food that is purely for foliage plants needs to be high in nitrogen. For flowering plants you should look for K2O, which contains high levels of potash. Feeding also tends to take place from early spring to late summer, whilst the plants are in active growth, and should be stopped in the winter.
One of the most overlooked practices of good house plant care is repotting. Most houseplants will grow a lot better if they are regularly potted on into larger pots. If they become potbound, their growth rate will rapidly decrease. Try to pot on plants in spring as the new growth is beginning.
That’s the basics of house plant care. You can find a wide array of beautiful, easy maintenance house plants at our recommended retail partners listed below. Happy growing!
